Touring handlebar setup

Post by MattyS »

I'm in the process of upgrading my handlebar setup from a standard drop bar with top brakes to a custom butterfly bar set up, I just thought I'd show you what I have come up with so far. Though it is still very much at the prototype stage I would say I am very pleased with the results so far.

What I have done is shim sections of an old chromed drop bar over some cut down bar ends and then position those mid way on some butterfly bars. This has let me use the old drop bar shifters in a forward riding position but also let me use the top mount levers on the much closer flats of the butterfly, giving me braking when I'm more upright.

While the bars are a little longer than I hoped, I'm going to take them on a couple of rides before making any changes.

Similar to a set-up you see a fair bit on mainland Europe - straight bars with tribals out front.

It looks like you have steel bar end clamps on a bent section of alloy bar....?
That bit of the alloy bar is not sleeved or anything to take a clamp, I don't think you should put a clamp there as any damage to the surface of the alloy bar will act as a "stress raiser" ie a point at which fatigue can start (if you ride the thing for any appreciable distance.)

If more reach is required, why not simply rotate the butterfly bar forward of the stem clamp rather than behind?

That's what I plan to do if I can loosen the flipping clamp!
I need an Allen key with a T bar end.

Have look at Sheldon http://sheldonbrown.com/deakins/handlebars.html
Also Meic of this forum has written about his experience of putting shifters on the forward sections of butterfly bars.
