convert shimano QR axle to solid/nutted axle

Post by mercalia »

convert shimano QR axle to solid/nutted axle.

Is it possible to do this with current Shimano hubs eg The Deore that SPA cycles use for its £86 hand built wheel ( 26") ? Dont know why this isn't an option why people obsessed with QR. If its easy how do I go about finding the right solid axle bits to replace the QR & how easy is it?

you need a 10x1mm threaded axle, probably 135mm + 20mm each side = ~175mm.

-and matching track nuts of course. All the lock nuts, cones etc just swap over.

shimano used to sell such things in cheapo freehubs but these days it may be easiest to get a 'wheels manufacturing' part. SJS sell the thing you need.

M10 x 174mm axle from Weldtite then reuse the cones etc from the QR axle. £10 for the axle and an hour of time to do the job.

QR axles are stronger than solid axles. That's probably a reason for their popularity in these days of increasing obesity. Anyway, the conversion is simple as Brucey and Redvee already said.

You will of course have to carry two extra spanners in your tool kit.

Carrying the spanner is just the reason i was going to replace the solid axle with a hollow one on my single speed(Screw-on freewheel)
The Shimano QR ones i have look much higher quality than the solid, slightly bent one i`me using at the moment.
Stronger into the bargain as well it seems.

just be careful when buying '10mm' axles and track nuts. There are plenty out there sold (in major chains....) as '10mm' which are actually 3/8" x 26tpi. Not the same thing at all.

If you want to check, take a length of M6 x 1mm studding; it should be a perfect mesh. If it is placed against a 26tpi thread then it will be out of mesh after about 20mm or so.

As an alternative you could replace the QR skewer with an allen key skewer.

I would be quite happy with a QR type axle but as long as an equivalent solid axle but is it possible to get such? I really want to be able to use the M10 extension nuts of my cheapo trailer rather than use the supplied deathtrap skewer. I had considered M10 TO M5 insert for these special ends, but that dont seem to exist. Thats the reason why I am looking into this. I already use some kind of non QR skewers, but cant use them to attach my bob yak look alike trailer. If any one knows the whereabouts of M10 TO M5 inserts then my problem would be solved withut have to replace the axle.

these are the special ends that u use on a normal solid M10 axle. The are just under 6 cm long. The arms of the trailer slot over the far ends, simple but effective.

converting this to accept an M5 skewer won't make the assembly that much stronger IMHO. The M5 skewer is designed to accept a tension load, not a bending one such as a trailer might exert.

If you are carry a load on your trailer and the load passes through these mountings then I'd get a solid axle every time.

Wheels manufacturing.
