Today.......

Post by reohn2 »

......was probably one of the worst I've experienced for close overtakes/bad driver attitude/stupid manouevres.I've always maintained that the Knutsford/Alderley Edge area of Cheshire is the worst place I've cycled in for such drivers but today took the biscuit.
Before a coffee stop at 15miles I'd had four close overtakes and one idiot who came past, swung left and immediately turned right,a two second wait was all it needed for it to be avoided. One of the close o/takers turned into a small business park,I followed and had a word,he was very apologetic claiming he was normally very careful,I thanked him.
After morning coffee I then had an oncoming WVM jumping up and down in his cab like a monkey and gesticulating because i was riding around a series of potholes on my own side of the road :? ,I knew he was going to deliver at a pub a few hundred metres back as the road was a dead end for vehicles just beyond it.I went back(mistake)to see what all the fuss was about. The short conversation went along the line of,me,''what was all that about'', WVM''you was all over the road'',me''I was all over my side of the road because of the potholes down the nearside'' WVM''you should keep to your own side of the road'',me''I was on my own side of the road and it's non of your business what I'm doing on my side of the road!'',WVM''**** off',me ''you **** off ***head''WVM''don't call me a ***head'',me,''if the condom fits!.
At which I was about to ride off when I heard a threat,I kindly explained that he wasn't big enough.
He remained seated, and I rode off.
Later,thinks... I'm far too old for this kind of encounter and had to laugh at my reaction as he could have been an ex Marine or such,in which case would've given an old fart like me a right going over, mental note, KEEP CALM AND THINK OF MY STUNNING GOOD LOOKS :?

Later one clever **** decides it's a good idea to overtake on a blind right hand bend with an oncoming car that he couldn't see but I could,so I hold out my hand in a STOP! kind of fashion, whereupon he slaps on and drops back in behind me.
A couple more close o/takes and I thought I was done, but I hadn't reckoned on early dart Friday(loonie hour is always early on Friday and starts about 3.30pm)an exttrreeemmmlllyyyy close one on a unavoidable(for me) fast A road, which is wide enough not to need to(Vorpal I was 1m from the curb)a car two white Transit sized vans no problem, the third a Transit Connect sized van was as near as it gets without contact the two cars following it gave me loadsa room (read 2m+) so he had room    .

There's a humpbacked bridge about a mile from home,a goonatic in a Golf decided it was a good place to overtake with an oncoming tractor(big blue 4x4 one)towing a big trailer, best about it was that he was giving me enough room(1.5m?) :? tractor driver was going bananas at him.

I wasn't done yet,a narrowish straight lane(think two HGV's have to slowdown to pass kind of narrow),there's a car approaching my road to my left on a side street,a little too quick for my comfort,I spotted him about 200m before(good sight lines),check mirror and move to primary, older lady in a Mazda well behind me decides she'll overtake even thought there's a line of oncoming traffic, the first one of which begins flashing his lights at her,she jumps on the brakes and IMO if it hadn't have been for her ABS she'd have locked up :? And she wasn't anywhere near level with me when she had to brake hard.

I've been wondering all day what flicked the switch :? could it be the 15mph+SW winds upsetting their Biorhythms?(school teachers tell me that wind doesn't half wind children up and get them excited).
Or perhaps yesterday's Budget(you'd think they'd be happy with a 1p off beer, and reduced Bingo costs :? ,not to mention when they get their pensions they can now dash out and buy a Ferrari,Lamborgini etc (other cars are available) :?
Anyway I missed all the scattered showers :) and I remained intact, though slightly frazzled
And despite it all had a good ride :) ..................though things could be better

PS,I've forgot to mention there were a few good natured motorists on the roads today too :D

It seems they're all out today John.
I had a lady in a red mx5 pull out across my lane from behind a great big parked van, I dont even think she looked to her right to check it was clear. I near locked up my brakes and almost hit the van through swerving around her.
Had a dumpster/tipper type truck pass close enough and fast enough that the wind turbulence rocked the bike and my girlfriend is still in traffic an hour after leaving here (usually a 20 minute drive) thanks to multiple pile ups on the motorways.
I doubt they'll ever learn.
Glad you survived unscathed.

I went skiing today, though the weather was lovely for cycling, too.

reohn2, sorry you had so many close encounters on your ride today, but thanks for the mention

The whole cycling thing is a world of stark contrasts! Sorry to those who've reported on the 'dark side', above!

I was finally persuaded, today after lunch, to get off my lazy posterior and get out for a bit. Mrs P declined to accompany me this time, making this my first solo leisure ride for many months.

All went like a song. Flowers were out in profusion all along the roadside: daffodil, primrose, celandine, wood-anemone, ladys-smock, violet... Birds were calling... Sun shining most of the time, though I did ride into a brief shower (with rainbow) at one point. Not one motorist gave me the slightest trouble. If they had done, I'd have remembered it. Only did 17 miles, but that's a decent ride for me now, at my age and in my condition. Maybe I'll build up on it as the season advances.

Yes, "Sprrrring is here!" (as Tom Lehrer so famously once put it, in another song). But I poisoned no pigeons...

I had a WVM squeeze past me while I was waiting to turn right at a mini-roundabout - waiting for the RAB to clear of traffic. He squeezes past shouting 'are you going to take all ****ing day?' How much more contempt would he have displayed if I had been on my bike and not driving the car?
