IT Advice please. Tiff files.

Hi
I've got a bunch of photos in Tiff format that I want to edit without losing quality before print. I only have Picasa, which does not support Tiff, on the computer. Need a free simple program I can use that does not load a lot of unwanted crap with the download. Any ideas?
Thanks. Jim.

you can use Adobe's Photoshop/Lightroom online for a 30 day trial, as a Cloud (online) service. The uninstaller does remove everything afterwards.

Dear Jim,
first rule of IT support is: give the support persons as much info as you can - they are not mind-readers... ;-)
Assuming you are using Microsoft's Windows, and many people do not, simply use Paint to open the file and save it as a jpg

Any further questions, please do ask...

With a Mac, you open it in Preview, and Shift/Cmd/S to save it in the location of your choice but select JPG.

Doesn't converting to jpeg introduce the compression and loss of quality the OP doesn't want? I think the OP wants something which will edit his TIFF files directly

Fair comment. I'm on XP. I'm going to export them to make up a book for my daughters birthday. I've looked at Paint but can't see a crop option.

Apparently Picasa CAN edit TIFF files.

I'm not a Picasa user so I'm only quoting from what Google tells me. It seems you need to enable the TIF functionality. It is enabled in Tools -> Options, then choose the 'File Types' tab. Tick the box for 'TIF/TIFF' and it should work 8)

FastStone Image Viewer is small, fast, and can do a surprising amount.

Tiff files are big - if you save them as PNG the files will be smaller but you won't lose quality. For printing you may still need to save them as JPGs, though.

Edit: I forgot to say that it is free.

As soon as you open it in Picasa it lists it as a Jpeg. It will also only let you save it as a Jpeg. Wierd.

Side note: if you've updated to Mavericks, "Save As" isn't an option in Preview - the command is "Export" and there isn't a keyboard shortcut for it (mind you, it's relatively trivial to add your own keyboard shortcut, but I found it a tad annoying as that's the main use I have for Preview).

I highly recommend Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ and the available plugins. Irfanview will open almost any image format and convert to another. It also has a batch conversion utility which is great if you have lots of files. Best of all its freeware.

Cheers

That's another reason I'm not attracted to Mavericks.
All three of our Macs are at 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

Side note to you :D
We have an elderly iBook too, and it's still at 10.2 (Tiger?).......... and it runs MacOS9 as well. :D

Noooo! PNG files most definitely lose quality, and are not designed for photos. Also, a JPEG loses quality every time you save, even if no changes are made. Leave them in TIF until you are sure they are correct.
