Puncture Problem!!!!

Post by Edwards »

Today while riding I got a phone call from MrsE. She was stuck behind some people that I had already passed instructing me to wait.
The reason she was stuck was she had an unauthorised evacuation from the rear and was not a happy Bunny.

So I waited with the dog as she walked down the cycle track to catch us up.
I then did all the usual stuff removing the wheel and half the tyre to find a Thorn had gone through the Schwalbe Marathon and tube.
I thought it best to remove the thing from the tyre carcase and not leave any bits in there to get pushed into the replacement tube.
All went well as I managed to push it out but not quite enough to get hole with my fingers. I was not sure what she had ridden through :? and did not want to know  . So closed my eyes and used my teeth to grip and pull the thorn out :D .
The new tube fitted inflated and we were soon on our way.

The moral of this tale is to take a pair of pliers to pull stuff out of tyres next time.

Hi,
I prefer a small slotted screwdriver 3mm blade, slightly blunted.

Its more effective for prying out small thorns and very small flints, small enough also to push right through the tyre if its a larger thorn without increasing the hole size.

If you look very carefully you may also see thorns as small as 0.5 mm diameter in tyre, these shear off and normally have about 2mm depth or more.

Last time I repaired Madame's tyre, I know exactly what she'd ridden through.

Washed my hands thoroughly after that. Got some hand sanitiser/wipes straight away too.

There's your problem. There aren't any motorised vehicles to sweep the carriageway.

Anyway, jesting apart. Squeeze tyre hard and extract thorn with teeth.
If there's manure on tyre, wash it off with own urine.

Sounds pedantic, but it works

Always fit the tyre in the same way.

Choose a point of the tyre, for instance the down arm of the letter A of the manufacturer's name and align it with the valve

That way when you find the hole in the tube, you can align the tyre and know exactly where the offending article will be

Saves time locating the puncture cause in the casing

PS my answer has always been to carry a small "Leatherman" copy in my bah as it has pliers, knife, bottle opener, and can be picked up for a couple of quid

I have a couple of these,DSL is the makers name, and as you say bought for a £2 or so when filling up the car.
I've found them to be of extremely good quality and very useful of all kinds of things, pulling thorns being just one of many.
I've even used mine to saw off offending eye level branches on some of the tracks I use regularly and being s/steel don't rust in the bag if they get damp.

You'd be well advised to get a Leatherman copy. Someone gave me a real one for Christmas and it weighs as much as my tent.

Even with genuine Leathermen (? Leathermans? :? ) they come in a whole raft of sizes. I was given a Micra which comes in a 6.5cm long closed & only 51g. My son has a Wave & that is a bit of a brute - 10cm long closed (which isn't too bad) but 241g.

Whoever bought mine was thinking brute. Mine's a Surge - 335g. Sitting in its usual place at the back of a drawer it's about as much use on the road as its Afghan namesake.

Leatherman Juice S2 (125g) I carry on the lighter bike and also in my pocket when out hiking, on the heavier donkey bike I carry a Leatherman Sidekick (198g).

Both excellent tools and I mean that from a perspective of them being tools in their own right rather than a fold up bodge designed for light tasks. I've worked in engineering workshops all my life and I wouldn't go anywhere without one of the Leathermans, they're that good.

I've had a couple of cheap Leatherman style tools but both failed (my Aldi tool bent and collapsed in the hand when trying to grip particularly tight with the pliers) and now, courtesy of the good lady one Christmas, I have a Leatherman Juice Pro weighing in at 191g - have given it some very heavy treatment and it has never let me down.
