Lorry safety - BBC inspiring interview

Post by Revolution »

Worth listening to this interview on The World at One 15th April [40min 20sec into the programme]
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b040h2k2
Kate Cairnes whose sister was killed by a lorry SMIDSY incident, gives an inspiring and articulate interview with some pretty shocking statistics regarding lorry 'accidents' .
It is inspiring to have people as well informed and impassioned as this campaigning on our behalf.
Thanks you Kate.

Hi,
In my local press a driver pleaded guilty to killing a cyclist, turning left just after a cycle lane finishes (cycle lane is a two foot marked strip) local cyclist Graham Brodie (Torbay CTC), Ken Robertson (Mid Devon Rod Club), agree that the cycle lane should be extended with an ASB at traffic lights.

Not a milllion miles away on the same road just a stones throw I was hit by a car (My only time to date) , the door handle hit my femur and I fell off, the driver Foreign, did not even come to my help just stood leaning on the car roof down the road, saying " You need to indicate" :? Not for going straight on I dont.......he's foreign...............different rules.

I just mounted my bike and was sore for a few days, I would certainly not tolerate this today.
I was lucky, my case was unusual in the fact that the driver thought by his country rules that If I did not signal that I was turning left.
You might never escape this type of manover by a driver but I am not sure making it easier for drivers to spot cyclist will change anything.

Torbay is rife with dud cycle lanes even contra flow lanes against traffic flow :? Also they are constantly changing one way streets to two way and back to one way along with making up road rules for which lane to use at roundabouts.
One day a council or the paid experts will be in court for producing cycle lanes that give people a false sense of security, these cycle lanes need to adhere to one standard or not at all.

In My Opinion more safety can be gained by the rider in the way they position themselves and the way they use cycle lanes or not.

In the above link the rider may not have had any incling that the driver would side swipe the cyclist, a previous good track record seem's to have got them out of jail.

To be behind a lorry you either have to catch them or they have to overtake........................
