External nut brake calipers

Post by samcallard »

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheap(ish) caliper brakes with an external nut? I'm fixing up an old Peugeot frame and most of the brake calipers I find have recessed nuts.

Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks guys

St John St. Cycles sell a long brake bolt for Shimano Dual Pivot Caliper brakes.
Put your existing front caliper on the back and replace the short bolt on the existing rear with the long bolt and put on the front.
I done this on my 1982 Mercian which does not have recesses for the brake nuts.

These are an external nut fit.

Note that they are deep drop calipers, which is what you may need on many old bikes when retro-fitted with 700C wheels. They are too deep for modern road bikes though.

you can also buy new bolts that fit most DP calipers. Typically you need one long one for the front brake; best to convert the back brake to fit the front and then you use the AK bolt that came in the front caliper in the back instead.

SJS and Spa both sell suitable bolts IIRC

I have a set of Shimano 105 calipers that you can have for the cost of postage. They're about 15 years old but have not had much use since I broke the frame that they were on the the replacement frame took recessed brakes. They don't have any brake blocks/shoes but are otherwise complete.
