Mick F, I do not know of these kits of which you write. I run a Record 9 speed set-up. To change to 10 speed I would have thought that many, many, items would need to be changed?

Firstly, the bits weren't cheap!

I took a look at the Campag website and the Ergo spare parts diagrams, and also read: http://www.campyonly.com/howto/ergo_rebuild.html so I knew what I was up against. I'm a dab hand with clocks and small mechanical bits so wasn't afraid to have a go.

I bought:
2x G springs at £1.95 each
1x Spiral spring at £1.95
1x Ratchet thing at £1.50
1x Ratchet thing at £21.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll re-build the RH Ergo in a few weeks time ready for my Vincitore to reappear, but stay with 9sp for now.

EDIT:
Just thought.

In order to go from 9sp to 10sp, you need a 10sp cassette and a narrow chain too! I already have those in my bottom drawer......

Those multi-coloured bands on the seat tube look very smart. As I recall Mercian used to quote a (substantial) price for those but no longer do so in their latest catalogue.

p.s. I wonder what proportion of Mercian's customers have white/grey hair? You and I would appear to be two of them!
Dave

Wot? Me grey?

When I originally ordered my Vincitore, the price of the bands was about a fiver each.

BTW, in October 1986, the frame cost me £231.10 plus carriage of £4.00 and 15%VAT on the lot.

Grand Total = £276.39.

(I had brown hair in those days!)

I didn't want to ask what the cost for renovation was going to be ......

Er, yes, as I thought!
Think I might stay with 9 speed. After all, it is 4 more than Regina did all those years ago.

Will it require any special tools to pre tension springs, or hold them whilst assembling the ergo bits?

The way I understand it, no special tools will be required. Just make sure bits don't fly out and get lost! And re-assemble in the correct order.

I thought about buying a 10sp Ergo and selling my 9sp Mirage ones, but the new Ergos are "Escape" and Quick Shift. I don't want those, I want what I have in 10sp. Modification is cheaper too.

I'm going to 10sp because I can get the gear ratios I want in 10sp, but not in 9sp. I have a Chorus Triple 30/42/53 and a 10sp Centaur cassette 13 - 29. At present my 9sp cassette is 13 - 26.

Ah, those extra 3 teeth. It's always a comfort to know that there is a 29er which can be used if need be.
Funny that I accept Shimano QS on my offroad bike, but also like the subtle adjustment on old Campag Ergo front mechs for on road.

Good luck with the upgrade.

Update:

Just phoned Mercian and spoke to Jane. I asked her if she wanted a frame number to look through the records, but all she wanted was the colour. I said "Ruby Flamboyant."

She said, "Oh yes, Ruby Flam, it the one with all the extra bands on the seat tube, it's had to spend a total of 5 hours in the oven - so far!

I told her that the frame was 21 years old, and she was amazed to hear it had never been back for a respray in all those years. I explained that Saturday 8th Dec was the best day for us to come up and collect it, and that I hoped it would be ready.

"I'll get back to you in a few minutes," she said, "I'll have a word with the men in the workshop."

Anyway, upshot is that we collect on the 8th!! I can hardly wait!

The job will have taken 6 working weeks, I really miss my Vincitore. Now all I need to do is have a chat with our bank manager!
(I still haven't asked what the cost is going to be.)

Mick, there are 2 other guides to rebuilding Ergos, one by Nutty Cyclist & the other by an American named Lennard Zinn. IIRC there are a few tips & shortcuts you may wish to know about. Get Googlin'! :D

I was going to say something about testing the position of the new water-bottle bosses by using two cages and bottles to avoid the bottles wedgeing together (ask me how I knew about this problem lol) but as things have progressed to the oven stage , ahem I rather gather it is a bit late lol.

I hadn't realised you could upgrade ergo levers from 9-10 I assume Shimano don't allow the same upgrade ?

Hope it looks gorgeous when you collect it. I did think about refinishing my 12 year old 653 race frame but like you decided to stick with the original colour (flo lobster pink yuk!) I would miss it now and so would everyone that has seen it in the past 12 years

I fitted my bottle in it's cage on the down tube, then with another bottle in another cage moved it up and down the seat tube till I was happy. Then used a felt pen to mark where I wanted the holes.
It had to be low enough not to catch on my thighs, but not too low that it would foul the other bottle or even the front changer clamp.

The lower-end Ergos can only be modified if they're pre 2006(I think). From then on, the Xenon, Mirage and Centaur are "Escape" ie they can't index more than one sprocket at a time. For that reason (cheaper) Campag don't do the individual bits. Chorus and Record are still 'normal'.
My Ergos are 2004 Mirage, so ok!

But sorry, you're not asking the right chap about Shimano .....

I should have known you had been thorough  I once modified and upgraded a frame and didn't allow quite enough space so the 2x bottles were too close together.

wish I had a nice classic frame to cherish. I seem to have lost most of my belongings along the way due to moving, being broke or one thing and another. I could have bought one of the classic frames that Hilary Stone sold off recently but its not the same as owning something from new or a long time is it.

Post some pics when you get it back for us all to drool over.

I've been considering colour schemes recently too. The winter bike is looking a bit tatty so I might treat myself.

Does anyone know if a reflective paintjob is possible & who could do it?

It's ready!

Just spoken to Jane at the workshop. We pick it up on Saturday. I can't wait!

As for a reflective paint job, didn't Del Boy paint his mum's monument in the cemetery a luminous yellow? And didn't Rodney and Grandad paint the Chinese restaurant in the same stuff?

Is that what you want, Bikegeek?
Perhaps there's someone in Peckham ..........
