Been out of the RN nearly as long as was in it.
Joined at 16 going on 17, but pensionable service doesn't start (or didn't start) until 18.
You had to do 22years - age 40 minimum - to get a pension on discharge.
I did until 1996 - 27 odd years. (some of it very odd indeed!)
We were paid a pittance when I joined up, especially as a youngster like me.
Paid at a "daily rate" and paid in cash every fortnight on a Thursday.
My pay was 10/3d a day and give £7 a fortnight.
Tell people that today, and they wouldn't believe it.
These days I can't manage five minutes without, and I've never been in the forces.can you survive in the forces without spending a penny?
