Hi all, My gripe concerns the abysmal use of language? In common with other ignorant TV & printed media they fail to use correct words for the machines in the piece. How many times have we seen, heard or read "One Wheel Bike", "Quad Bike", "3 Wheel Bike" et al. They ran a feature of the young lady who cycled to the North Pole, displaying the machine to show the interesting features. I say "Machine" they said "Bike"! The fact that it wasn't a fall over cycle, but a Tadpole Tricycle, so why use the word "Bike"?
At the very least lazy thinking, at worst ignorance. As a Secondary Modern Lad, who left school with only Swimming Certificates, I find such abuse of language unacceptable from folk who all brag about being "Graduates"! As I told Kevin Mayne (CTC Chief a few years ago), "Cycling is a broad spectrum activity, so don't print the strapline on "Cycle" - "Keeping You On Two Wheels".
I refused to be a CTC member whilst they ran it! It was dropped, I rejoined.
Word can harm our case, so one should use the correct one's. TTFN MM CTC & Tricycle Association.

Possibly. On the other hand, talking about chain stays, pawls and ordinaries can be a bit cliquish from the point of view of someone newer to the sport. Every group has its terminology, and breaking into that can be harder than learning to keep up with the club run.

I ride a trike too. I always think that we have cyclists in the UK because we are more inclusive than they are in the US, where they talk about bicyclists. However, for a show that's hopefully attracting more people to ride, I wouldn't make a fuss about details of names for things.

Ah, I was thinking Great Dunn Fell (the road up which starts near the village of Knock). That's also a great climb if you're ever up East Cumbria way Natural Ankling.

Probably is Hardknott pass, its the same altitude climb as haytor hill climb but in about a little under half the distance wow , now everyone should give that a go :) Great Dunn Fell adjacent to Cross Fell where I have been sevearl times whilst walking the pennine way 35 years ago, well maybe next year I should tour the great climbs even if I take the camper and do some of these evil hills, send the missus to her mums :)
Not sure how many would still be on the bike after a 100 mile sportive like the presenter in the show :?

That sportive is the Fred Whitton Challenge climbing the 6 main Lakeland road passes. Bit too severe for me I'm afraid. Hardknott and its sister climb Wrynose are certainly an experience.

As for Great Dun Fell, you'll probably remember the big radar station at the top? The tarmac service road up to it is a public bridleway so you are allowed to cycle up it most of the way until the bridleway branches off. 550m ascent from Knock to where the bridleway leaves the road and branches off across the hill, 650m ascent from Knock to the radar station if you are being naughty and want to follow the road the remaining few hundred yards. You have to go back down the way you came though and that descent is fun :D

The Fred Whitton Challenge was one of the first sportives to be set up, and is always held in early May so that you don't have the summer to prepare, and to increase the chances of dire weather. Despite that, there are always many more applications than places.

A lot of people end up walking up Hardknott, but the feeling of relief after having traversed Hardknott and Wrynose without stopping, and realizing there were no more killer climbs before the finish, is something I'll not forget in a hurry!

Too many talking heads IMO.
Still and all having a bike show on TV is something.
Was disappointed with L'Eroica coverage, if ever a gig deserved it's own full length documentary......
Talk about missing the zeitgeist!
Retro is the new black right now and L'Eroica would have pulled in a non cycling audience as well as 'us'.

But The Cycle Show is about a variety of topics so couldn't be an hour on one of your favourite topics, personally I thought they got the coverage about right.
