Hello :-)
This isn't really a 'topic' as such - I just joined and wanted to say 'hello' to everyone. I made the momentous decision to return to two wheels at the ripe old age of 51 and had a Dawes Super Galaxy languishing in the garage ( bought 1988 ) which is now back at the dealers being returned to 'as new' condition ( well as close as possible !! ) with new rims etc etc etc
The site is great ! very helpful and informative. I hope to begin logging some miles soon - I intend to ride to and from work - do some evening rides and hopefully work up to some weekend 'mini tours' I love the countryside around Hereford so will try and work out some routes for there.
I intend to get some panniers for the rear and the rack which came with the bike doesn't seem too substantial, so if anyone can advise me as to what would be the best one to replace it with I'd be grateful
Anyway...... hello to everyone !!!
Colin

Re:Hello :-)
THANK YOU PILOTLIGHT !!!!
You've restored my faith in human nature and just in the nick of time too - I was seriously considering giving up before I'd even started and going back to four wheels exclusively !! LOL
Actually, with the nice weather we've been enjoying of late, there are probably far more cyclists out on the road than are sat in front of PC monitors !!

Hi Colin,
The best racks are Tubus - expensive but very good quality. A couple of other suggestions:
1. Join CTC - good discounts plus the magazine. Also CTC rides are excellent.
2. Join Sustrans - excellent organization.
Good cycling

Re:Hello :-)
Thanks Tom
I will check out the Tubus racks - thanks for the advice. I got my bike back today, it's had the following fitted which is probably only of interest to what I believe are known as 'tech heads'?
Mavic A319 rims, built onto Miche hubs and Michelin Transworld 'city' tyres ( 28's )
New chain and rear sprockets, new cables throughout ( outer & inner )
In addition its had a good 'seeing to' as far as bearings, greasing etc goes so it should see me through a few miles.
Though an engineer by trade, and capable of doing most things myself, I'm at the stage in life where the prospect of getting underneath a car ( or in this case, bike ) with a spanner or two is, to say the least, uninviting !! Yeah, I know, there's the 'satisfaction of having done it yourself' and all that, BUT.........lol
I guess some of us reach the age where home mechanics cease to be a hobby and become a chore. Of course I WILL be carrying out routine maintenance now that I've spent money on the thing !!!
Who knows ? If the bug takes hold strongly enough, I might even look at buying a new bike !
I already joined the CTC just a week ago but I'll check out the other org. you mentioned - sustrans
Thanks for your reply
Take care
Colin

Re:Hello :-)
Colin, where are you based? I am another 50+ cyclist, although I never lost the fascination with bikes in the first place. You will find it has been the best decision you have ever made as far as benefits to your general well-being go, as well as your bank account if you use the bike instead of the car.

Re:Hello :-)
Hi TJ
I am in Perry Barr near the Alexander Stadium. I've just returned from a ride
(which I thought would be easy !! ) to Lichfield and back.
The Brooks B17, which never really got 'broken in' has given me quite a lot of discomfort but I guess I need to get some clothing appropriate for that particular anatomical region !!! My shoulders ache a little and I was smothered in tiny little bugs which were a nuisance. but all in all I have to say I enjoyed my excursion.

Hi Colin! Welcome back to the wonderful world of two wheels!
I came back to it at the ripe old age of 38, and now my partner and I don't do any hoilidays that aren't on two wheels, we love it!
Enjoy your new-found freedom.

Re:Hello :-)
Welcome aboard, young'un (I have 5 years on you) and a Dawes rider too! I came through your neck of the woods last year doing End to End. The hopeless Tourist Information Office in Hereford didn't know there was a campsite 4 miles up the road - nothing within 20 miles they said! See my record of the trip at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard.d. ... /index.htm
Happy pedalling

Re:Hello :-)
Your reply prompted me to check up on how long I have been D.A. secretary, over 4 years. I am now over 76 and am beginning to feel it, but I still go out all day Tuesday and to tea on Sunday afternoon. Yes, we still have a club tea booked at a Pub on Sunday as we have since the end of food rationing (1954) and before the war. I feel it helps keep the club together.
