tyre longevity

Post by cyclop »

Has anyone cut the beads off an old tyre and used it as a liner to extend the life of another, less old, tyre?I,ve just done this so why not,any thoughts?

I wouldn't do it because it more or less doubles the weight of your tyre, and doesn't extend the life of the outer tyre very much.
It will take you from almost through to the canvas to through to the canvas round a fair bit of the tyre, but if you push it too far the outer tyre will start to split into a left half and a right half, the inner tyre will come out through the middle and you'll crash, or at least have to walk home.
Maybe it would be useful if you were very worried about punctures, but I'm not.

What I do do is carry a couple of sections of old tyre (3 to 6 inches) with the bead cut off that I can put inside to reinforce a bad cut or a section that's starting to go through the canvas enough to damage the tube. I have had a bit of old tyre behind a cut for a couple of thousand miles - long enough to get the tyre to nearly worn out.

Yes,I can see your point, there is in fact very little to gain in terms of longevity and that it could be dangerous, therefore will abandon the idea.thanks.

Hi
I carry a piece, as described by andrew_s, but only to get me home in the event of a blowout

I've done similar when I was waiting for fresh rubber to be delivered (after the first shipment was the wrong size)

I simply put some very old, worn through tyres over the merely old, worn through, tyres - trying to get the "worn through" in different places on the wheels.

Then I put a few cable ties around rim and tyres to hold them in place. After 10-15 miles all the cable ties had failed, but the "overtyres" stayed in place very well - probably cycled nearly 100 miles with them like that.

Of course on a trike with hub gears there is no issue with clearance or anything like that, so the very old tyres were simply placed outside the merely old tyres.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.
