Front hweel pulling to left under braking

Post by QUIST »

The front wheel pulls to the left noticeably under braking - its on my bob Jackson with drops and quick release brakes.

The bearings needs tightening on the front spindle but there is only a little play also the front tyre ( wheel 700 x 25 ) has worn more on left than right.

Initially i thought it was brakes blocks were not flush with rims but this is not the case

Any ideas

Thanks in advance

Sounds to me like the fork blades are out of alignment. See here: http://sheldonbrown.com/brandt/pull-side.html

Otherwise, if it really is just under braking, make sure that your QR skewers are done up really tightly. If not, there's a possibility that the front skewer could be slipping on the left hand side under braking, causing the problems you observe.

Before we jump to the conclusion that the frame is broken, what do you mean?
Do you mean the brake pushes the wheel to the left in the fork?
Or do you mean the bike heads for the ditch when you put the brakes on?

*any* play in the wheel bearings / hub will show up in braking. And the wheel acts like a lever, so the force of the brake is multiplied over that distance. That will look quite severe from above.

Unless the forks are visibly twisted, or something, IMO, the problem is 'little play' in the front hub. But even if there is something else going on, you won't be able to diagnose it until you'e got the hub & bearings sorted.
