There's skepticism and then there's just being mean-spirited, when the worst possible theories out of incomplete information are assumed to be the truth.

I don't think it's mean spirit so much as confirmation bias, tbh.

For the BBC to send this crew, with all its previous form, into Argentina at all when the situation there as regards us is not good at the moment is in itself evidence to me that the BBC are either looking in general to provoke a situation for publicity purposes or are a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

There are a lot of other countries in the world to visit, and (surprisingly) not all of them/their residents have been previously insulted by this programme. So there were other options.

I know that TG is pretty dire, like other TV programs such as those involving baking, dancing, and people with no talent trying to make a notice of themselves. Let's get back to proper entertainment, which we pay for.

This probably means absolutely nothing to 99.99% of the forum readers.
No-one's sussed this one yet?

The owner of this car - Landrover Discovery? - obviously lives in a particular town in Cornwall and is proud of it.
My point is, unless you clock the abbreviation, it means nothing whatsoever to you.

It's JUST possible that TG and JC knew nothing about the significance of the reg number in Argentina.

Quite a few plates ending in PNE floating round a certain Lancashire city

I could have owned the TG plate for years and never have associated it with the Falklands. It wouldn't spring to mind to check my license plate for potential local offence before driving it in another country either

Yes, that's the point.
Preston North End is precious to footie fans.
No doubt the chap in the Landrover was happy with his Liskeard number plate ................... well done FW! :D
Well sussed.

The point is, that's just possible that TG were innocent.

It doesn't mean that I believe they are innocent, it's just that there is an element of doubt, and because of this, they will get away with it.

Maybe it's a Cornwall thing, but we noticed on holiday down there this year several cars in one village (think Feock IIRC, but can't be sure) several cars with reg plates referencing the village name.

PNE is more likely as graffiti around Preston than number plates, but both are signs of curious priorities...

I was amazed by the number of Cornish flags out and about down there. There's obviously a lot of local pride. When's the Cornish independence vote happening?

Football club number plates are no more dubious than any of the other silly personalised number plates. It's a sad reflection of the nature of our society that even an item of mundane administrative necessity is turned into another opportunity for conspicuous consumption. Are we really that vain?

I bought one of these:
Screen shot 2014-10-13 at 08.04.11.png
Having worn it many times this year, it was only after a few weeks that I found passing drivers and also cyclists waving as the passed. It took me a while to suss out that it was the Cornish top! Yes, much pride is always evident in Cornwall and the Cornish.

When I wear other tops, I don't get the same reaction.

I'm not Cornish, but having lived here for 30years, brought up two children here, and have contributed to society, I feel I'm sort of adopted.

People on this forum have been calling Clarkson an idiot and buffoon for years. Now some dodgy plates turn up in Argentina, the TG team says it was coincidence, and suddenly everyone thinks that Clarkson has subtlety and finesse, even if it was in poor taste?

TG are very good at creating an atmosphere of doubt. They've done it before.
It's an old trick. A mate of mine worked with someone I'd simply call a liar, but the said liar always created a small fog of doubt around any of his offences to put critics off their stride. He was also very good at twisting things to make himself look vaguely like the injured party. It took video evidence from Inspector Knacker before they finally saw the back of him, and even then he was going for the sympathy vote by the 'it was just an honest mistake' route.
I'd far rather deal with an outright rogue than that sort of weasel (apologies to real weasels).

(Not that I would argue that this report shows Top Gear to have been telling "porkies"; but some people react badly to some situations and in their own minds it can become far more extreme that it really was).

It should if you were a multinational publicity stunt - who specialise in causing offence.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.
