Exustar Stelvios are good if you want to look "Normal" & take SPD or Time ATAC cleats. I go to work & even drive a bus in mine, no bother. I think Paul might flog you a pair of pedals cheap to go with them!

Thanks, I'll take a look at those too. I don't much care what they look like, just that I don't end up staring at the ceiling when attempting to walk in them. :-)

I'd recommend recessed Shimano mtb SPDs, unlike an earlier poster I'd say they're not only used by tourers/shoppers!

A pair of Shimano M520s/M540s, teamed with a decent mtn bike shoe is fine for long distances on the road. I've got a pair of the basic Specialised BG Comp Shoes, and I've not noticed any foot pain after long (say 100mile) rides.

These are fine for the odd stroll too, so OK for commuting. You wouldn't walk all day in 'em, but you're not restricted in the same way you would be with road clipless systems.

As another poster mentions overshoes, these winterise a lightweight shoe. With a £150 budget, you should easily find a pedal/shoe and overshoe combo in your budget.

Time ATACs and Eggbeaters are similar recessed pedal systems.

Thanks again for all the advice here. I finally got a pair of Specialized BGs. Will report back on them once I've used them for a while.
