I'm a happy meat-eater but I found the story of Scott Jurek (the ultra-marathon runner) fascinating. He was running hundreds of miles a week and so, being good athlete, would eat tons of burgers etc to keep the carbs and protein up. But he slowly started to eat more veg, found it was nice and, more importantly, found his performance improving. He has been a vegan for years and he won tons of ultra-marathons so it worked for him!

I haven't had such a conversion, but reading things like that makes me happier with the times when I just want a salad or some rice and some veg. It also helps that it's cheaper not buying so much meat.

So I can't really tell you why you might be craving vegetables, but perhaps it's nothing to worry about.

It's not even as though I have ever been a veggie person, the occasional bag of mix veg turns up in my freezer and that
lasts a heck of a long time.

I have been chomping on (gorging) on Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage,Eggplants, and other bitter tasting veg without meat or gravey (causing the un-ladylike side effects) and I really don't know why.

Cakes, meat, chocolate and sugar repulses' me and they are things that I love!

Am I sick? Is there a reason my mind or body is off kilter and will it last long.

Thank you

Yes - we're back to being serious now.

Surely, there's not a problem with what you ARE eating, the problem could be with what you're NOT eating. Vegetarians, vegans even, are healthy and some are very fit and strong if they set out to be, but they do put some thought to fulfilling all their dietary needs.

I wasn't sure at first whether you were being serious, or building up to having a joke with us, but it seems you were being serious and then there's a question of whether you're worried about your full and varied nutrition, or whether some physical or psychological change has taken place. From a dietary point of view you're missing proteins, calcium, Omega oils to mention a few and when I considered becoming a veggie I looked in to all that.

Those of us who are amateurs can not give full and learned advice. I know that there are medical professionals on the Forum, so perhaps they can offer something, but if it's as simple as outlined in your original post, and particularly if it's persisting, I'd be seeing a doctor and talking it through.

I read once that it takes 40% of the energy in red meat for the body to digest it.Don't ask me for a link I've long since forgetton but was convinced enough at the time by the study.

I think you're mistaken on the proteins and calcuim both are easily obtainable from vegetables, fruits and pulses.
Omega oils you're possibly right, though I think I'm right in saying flaxseed oil, linseed oil and olive oil fulfil some of that need.
I ate no animal products for years without any ill effect though we do now eat a little oily fish and the odd (free range)egg.
BTW one of the greatest cyclists from the UK Robert Millar is vegetarian, his simple explanation for it was that they feed animals *****, so if he ate animals he ate *****.
I couldn't agree more,if you do eat animals make sure you know where they're from and what they've eaten, you just wouldn't believe what they're fed on,not to mention the growth hormones and antibiotics on a regular basis.
I wouldn't touch factory farmed chicken with a barge pole,as for pigs,yuk :? .

Yes, but you still have to think it through and balance it out John.

I am still none the wiser (although more regular  ) as to why I should start going through this phase
at such a late stage of my life.

I did look at the meat section in my local store and couldn't bring myself to stay in the aisle for long.
So far I have various types of veg that I just wrap in foil and steam in the oven, as I just crave basic meals.

Also lost the will to smoke, I haven't smoked in two days as they taste vile (I really like smoking) and have had no coffee
as that tastes vile as well.

Was 13.8 sometime last month and now I am 12.3 I am 5'6 so I could do with the weight loss, but I find the sudden
change very odd! I like junk food, but now the smell makes me feel ill.

Is this my body rebelling or just one of this mid-life dramas, that people go through.

PS

All the naughty tykes will still wake up next to a carrot top

Not particularly.
All we did was to stop eating red meat initially, but what we weren't prepared for was that within a very short time,a couple of months,we didn't like any meat at all,it was a texture thing we think.
Shortly after,I stopped drinking milk and only had rice milk(since changed to oat milk) though we still eat cheese.
I do eat a bit of dried fruit and nuts but I've always eaten those.
It's only within the last three or four years I've begun eating eggs and a little fish, perhaps once a week at most.
We didn't change our diet to compensate for not eating meat at all, that's 20+years ago.
The only vitamin supplement I take is 1gram of Vitamin C a day.
My work has been very physical(building work and mining) all my life.

I agree with Reohn, that you don't have to give much thought to the change to vegetarian, in terms of 'balancing' your diet. Lots of people have little idea of how to eat a balanced diet, even with meat, anyway. So no change there.

For some years I went completely vegetarian, i.e. no fish, though I did continue with eggs and dairy produce. I returned to meat-eating when I met my wife, but we gradually cut down on the number of meat-dishes per week. We realised that the 'meat-with-every-meal' mantra doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. Now, as I said, we eat pescetarian, which Mrs P prefers to a totally veggie lifestyle. Suits me fine.

A lot depends on whether you do your own cooking, and whether you're prepared to follow recipes. If you can't give up the meat altogether, but you do feel you may be eating too much, try interleaving the odd meat-free day in between the carnivorous ones. You'll surprise yourself, perhaps!
