New free map app out for Android / iOS and works offline

No one has mentioned the OSMAND android app.

Been around for a while. We, or rather my son, used it successfully to navigate around Northern Spain last year. There is no iOS version as far as I am aware.

I tried Osmand and liked it, but found it horrendously slow. Maybe that's just because my tablet's a couple of years old...

Were you using the vector maps rather than cached tiles? They are slower, but they're also not an option on many map apps.
