Bottom Bracket Screwup

Post by MGate »

A friend of mine has a Raleigh Clubman, nice by but with inappropriate (for him and for most mere mortals in North Yorkshire) gearing. So I suggested moving to a triple, and replaced the Shimano compact with a square taper BB and triple chainset just to try out. Fine apart from a new lever required(sorted thanks to a CTC members clearout £40). All went well so we ordered a Spa triple with Stronglight rings and a JP400 BB.

Popped out the temp campag BB unit to put in the strong light and it just wouldn't go, felt like I'd strip the threads if I increased the pressure. Removed, checked the other side was the right thread, all ok. Tried again - still no joy. Started thinking "English or Italian threads?" Compared against campag unit. Same direction...

Looked with a torch inside the BB shell and saw the end of the large screw used to hold the cable guides on the outside the BB shell, backed that off and the unit went in fine! The JP400 unit was about ½ mm wider than the campag unit - ground down end of screw and refitted.

Just shows you its worth a look before you apply brute force! Anyone else with a similar story?

Its one of those little snags to trap the unwary.........each time I come across it, I think "I'll remember that next time".......fat chance!
.....I up-ended one of my bikes the other day and the confounded screw was still at half mast, where I had "temporarily" left it so I could get the BB unit past....
....its a bit like connecting up the cables, then finding the only guide on the whole bike that isn't slotted is the one guide I've forgotten to thread the cable through.

Remember, anything you do (or don't do) to your bike can have safety implications

It is a better scenario than finding that the threads inside a BB shell have not been cut deep enough towards the middle..
I should coco.

What sort of Raleigh Clubman had a Shimano chainset?
My Clubman had a Raleigh chainset originally, and I upgraded to Stronglight.

inside bottom bracket shells I've found;

- unmitred tubes
- many and various cable guide fixings (not all of which can be easily dealt with)
- stray ball-bearings (too many come out... how does that work..?!)
- bits of newspaper...
- rust!
- BB parts bonded in with epoxy resin
- bad threads

It is a trip into the unknown for sure!

cheers

drips of braze, thick enough to angle the BB cartridge enough that it wouldn't go through.
