New member asking for advice

Post by Taul Paul »

Good evening CTC members
New member here, Taul Paul from Sheffield. I and a few friends are considering audax and touring now. I have one or 2 questions.
1 what are good dealers to go to for touring related bikes and equipment?
2 Specific info on dynamo hubs? Where to get, what type, can we get all the bits and maybe charge phone?

Thanks for now.
See you at the 3rd jan Hopey new day ride?

Spa Cycles, Thorn, Triton.

Rosebikes are good for dynamos.

What bike do you ride at the moment?

Is it comfortable?

Does it carry a load?

It is often better to use what you have to see how you get on with these new adventures, then see what you would like to improve?

Some dynamohub reading.

http://www.ctc.org.uk/file/public/featu ... ynamos.pdf

Though like many others I paid less than half of the price that he has given for the Shimano hub.

If you're thinking of buying a touring bike, having a dynamo fitted at the time should be cheaper than buying another wheel. Even more so if you buy from someone who builds the bikes up to order.
Sp Cycles should be up on the list, easy to get to from Sheffield and they encourage you to have a decent test ride. You could tour or Audax on either the touring or Audax model, you need to think about where your main interest and use are going to be and what you're prepared to compromise.
What bike do you have now? The more riding you do the more informed your decisions will be, have a good look (And chat) on the Audax at what other people are using, quite a variety, but you'll get plenty of ideas.

In cj's article Beardy links to he reckons modern hub 'dynamos' are run on 1000th or less of the power put into the bike. Since most of us pedal at 50-90 revs that means one stroke every 10-20 mins runs the beast. Can that be true?

Depends on your current power output....
Since the electrical power output is 2 or 3 Watts you have to put out at least 3000 Watts to make that true....

Er, where? "Internal hub generators are silent and have much less drag: equivalent to ascending only five or six feet per mile, i.e. one-in-a-thousand." was the nearest I could find - that's equivalent to a gradient of one-in-a-thousand, which is a different herring to 0.1% of your power input ;)
