I'm not saying that they have 'no purpose', more that it is debatable that their benefits actually outweigh their disadvantages. When they get a bit manky, I chuck 'em, and I don't miss them much at all; I wouldn't dream of buying new ones....

I note with interest that if QR springs were such a wonderful idea, brilliantly implemented, I would suppose that they would never get lost or mangled, and therefore never be in need of replacement.....
You could very well be correct re the hubs, but as I say, the springs were perfectly central whatever the make!

I lost a rear Campag spring a few years ago and decided to try to use it without any springs.
What an awful idea! Getting the wheel on was terrible!
Absolutely useless - quick release was ok - but getting the wheel back on was difficult to say the least. Maybe the front would have been just about sufferable.

As it happens, I found the spring and couldn't wait to use the pair again.
If I'd not found it, I'd have willingly paid 99p for a new one.

you may feel that way but I've never had any trouble at all getting wheels in and out without the aid of any springs.

It seems to me that, if they were truly wonderful things, they would unquestionably be 'worth 99p' to all and sundry, and the OP wouldn't have bothered posting this thread in the first place....

Fitting a wheel with springs requires two hands, fitting a wheel without springs requires three.

They're well worth 99p for the odd one, but I think that point was to buy a big box of them...

I don't think that you losing them is their fault - on that basis my Brooks that I left on a shelf is a terrible saddle because sitting directly on the seatpost clamp is uncomfortable

you must suppose I have three hands.

I don't.

My wheels without springs go in and out quite easily, thank you.

As for them getting lost, as noted earlier in the thread some QRs have springs that stay captive in the nut and the lever end. Even though this is but a temporary state of affairs in many cases, they should all be like this (or better), instead of 'not' which is the more common experience. Sometimes mechanisms that fire loose springs out when they are disassembled are unavoidable, but this isn't one such case, it is just poor design and cheapskate manufacturing...

Now Lawyers Lips really are a nightmare, QR springs or not! You really do need three hands sometimes :(

Simple get them off scrap bikes that are being dumped as have found no matter how rusty the bike is these being hidden are in new condition, should know as have just scrapped a 'nineties hybrid which was an abused dogs breakfast. Still have the original skewers and springs, the rear wheel is now on my scrap bike with no problems. No, have never found them mangled either, all are in perfect condition even on bran flakes bikes.

I agree entirely.
How Brucey does it by himself, I really don't know.

I tried, and found it terribly difficult. The flanges of the QR catch on the dropouts, and I had to jiggle the QR back and forth to get the ends past the sides of the dropouts, but the jiggling was hit and miss to say the least.

Springs make it simple and easy ............. and foolproof.

like many things it merely requires a little practice, rather than three hands!

I have to admit I am with Mick on this one. Whilst I agree that they can get lost and it is easy to forget to put them back on after maintenance, that applies equally to most bits on a bike. I have never mangled one nor had one go rusty. I think they are a very simple invention that does the job for which it was intended very well.
