Cycling public liability insurance - how much is needed?
Cycling public liability insurance - how much is needed?
Hello, I'm looking into purchasing cycling public liability insurance. Cycleplan seem to give the best value, but I don't know whether to get insurance up to £1M, £2M or £5M indemnity. Are there conceivable scenarios where a cyclist's liability would be more than £1M or £2M? It would be interesting to know how much cover people here buy. Thanks in advance for any responses.

£1M isn't much these days if a young person has injuries which will leave them needing care for the rest of their life. How might a cyclist be responsible? eg How about causing the driver of another vehicle to swerve into a pedestrian, or even a queue of them? These scenarios are rare, which is why the relevant insurance is so cheap. You can't predict the unpredictable. I don't think many people would have believed that a motor car - even a Landrover - would have been enough to derail a high speed train causing it to crash head on with another train. It happened, and the insurer picked up the tab.
PS When we've had this type of discussion before, it's been pointed out that even if you have a claim against the other party, third party insurance helps you deal with their counter-claims.

FWIW British Cycling "Ride" level membership also has £10 million 3rd party insurance.
As has been stated already, big claims could arise even if very, very rare. I would imagine the levels are set such that it is extremely unlikely for a potential claim to exceed that amount.
