Steve abraham attempt
Re: Steve abraham attempt
I liked the bit on his site about his schedule during the summer would mean him getting on the road at 4.30am most days to take advantage of the quiet traffic and use major roads, so by the time the rush hour is on, he's already deep into the countryside.
Re: Steve abraham attempt
'older' club mates have talked of the days when they waited for a lorry to give them a draft up a particular hill when out training.
Brings back memories of doing National Service at Weston Super Mare and riding home to Epsom every 4th Friday on the 48hour pass weekend. Left at 4.00pm and rode up to the A4 and with a suitable lorry got towed to Reading before having to leave the A4. Strangely the faster I went with a lorry the longer the final stretch took so I always arrived home at about the same time -140 miles in 10 hours.
Re: Steve abraham attempt
Is he allowed to get the miles in indoors on the rollers when the weather is bad?
That's what I do.

OK, let's phrase things a little differently for the 'hard of thinking'.
Ignoring topography, have you tried riding your bike for longer than you are stationary, for days on end? Now think about doing that through January weather. Do you think that is harder than going for piddly little 50 mile rides with hills?

Re: Steve abraham attempt
It's very interesting to (try) make comparisons between the rides 75 and a bit years apart.
The 12 & 24 hour (UK) records are approximately 25% & 20% further respectively than from TG day. On that basis alone I would expect Abrahams to shatter the record, injury or accident notwithstanding
Wheel, tyre, gear technology, clothing & probably lighting too (making it easier to ride at speed at night), throw in better diet & the ability to consume more calories easier & vastly quicker and having a computerised checking system for the most part will save Steve quite a bit of time every day.
Abraham's has done some serious mileages in his career to date, really serious http://oneyeartimetrial.org.uk/biog & whilst Godwin was younger at 27 & Abrahams at 40 I don't think that pulls the balance back, not even close.
Would a modern day Godwin go further than Abrahams, who knows, it's impossible to say, people have being debating who was the best from various eras in all aspects of competition for centuries. My own rugby club is deciding who was the greatest in each of the positions from over the 150 years we have existed..it's an impossible task, everything changes over time.
Godwins 75,000 miles on a 30lb bike is almost unbelieveable, it is truly an epic human achievement, when (not if) Abraham's beats the record it will be no less of an achievement.

No, you cover No miles on a roller
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Who are you insulting there? I have re-read it a few times now and I cant see anybody saying anything like that.

Re: Steve abraham attempt
Have you seen the national news today?? - many reports that 20 minutes brisk walking is good for us........
Now if Steve reports to his GP that he sits down for 18 hours a day, and probably only walks a couple of hundred yards???
I'm a trifle concerned that Mr Abraham may be contacted by the 'Exercise Police'

Re: Steve abraham attempt
I was in town yesterday and parked at one end of the town, and walked to the shops. Not far, maybe half a mile tops.
Last evening, I walked into the village and back. Again, not far, maybe a mile.
I don't do much walking, generally having no need to.
What I found was two things.
1. Walking is slow, no matter how "brisk" you walk.
2. I couldn't stop thinking that I'd have been better/faster and more comfortable on a bike.

I'm sure for many people 20 minutes walking a day would be seen as some crazy insane waste of time and effort! (I generally do about an hour a day before anyone starts

After the kind of mileage he's doing, Steve Abraham will be lucky if he can walk more than a couple of hundred yards!

I agree with you on that. Having done some 12Hr time trials (years ago I add) I know how difficult it is to do that sort of mileage in a day....... But to do it every day? He must have a supreme fitness.

Re: Steve abraham attempt
I wouldn't say brisk walking counts as very fast. Just want to get over that sauntering along doesn't quite cut it.
