.If in doubt about using forest tracks should I USE THEM? May Pemissive use may be made of ALL forest tracks unless there are express notices to the contrary, ie lumbering/logging?

All Forestry Commission forest roads (and forest roads are those which stoned) as opposed to rides which are generally grassed and racks (which are for management access) are permissive and can be used by cyclists whether or not they are waymarked as cycle routes.

On privately-owned forest land permissive access is entirely at the discretion of the landowner. Usually where permissive access exists it is for pedestrians only, forest owners do not want the potential damage from large numbers of cycle users or the risk factor - and I have worked for one organisation where cyclists illegally hurtling around a permissive path caused a great deal of complaint from walkers, dog walkers and people pushing children's buggies etc.

Does Sustrans include Forest permissive tracks on its maps, or would that be exceeding the definition of "permissive"?
