Uploading GPX files to Garmin Connect

Hi there

Does anyone have any tips for uploading a GPX file into Garmin Connect as a course, which I can then manipulate etc?

I know how to put the GPX file straight onto the Edge 800 unit by cutting and pasting the GPX into "new files" folder but this doesnt seem to include the topography/gradient map, which would be really useful to have for longer rides - so if anyone has any tips for this as well, I'd be really grateful!!

My thinking is that being able to import a GPX file into Garmin Connect, I can then manipulate it slightly and send the course to the Edge unit with all topography included!

Any help very welcome!

Thanks, mat

I'm not 100% sure but I think the topography and gradient are map features rather than course features. Does the 800 actually display a map or merely give turn commands?

It shows everything - turns, map and gradient etc.

It depends what you are using to produce the gpx file. I tend to use bikehike.co.uk and then save the tcx file to the device directly. This will then give you the gradient

It seems to be any form of GPX that struggles, whether those sent by mates who have created courses, Wiggle rides, a charity ride last Summer etc.

Just need to find a way to import into Garmin Connect so that I can manipulate it - rather than load it directly onto the Edge unit.

Login to Garmin Connect online (not the app).

Goto 'Activities' then top right in blue it says 'import'. Follow the dialogue box then import. Open the activity then click on the settings 'gear cog' icon - (top right ish) then pick save as course.

Thanks MGate but...when I click to "upload", it keeps saying "undefined" and wont import.

I know the GPX files to be genuine as they're a route a mate put together and has sent over.

Any ideas? Much appreciated.

I have found that Garmin Connect really only likes .gpx (or .tcx or .fit) files that are created (i.e. captured on a ride) by a Garmin gadget ... the files that you have [ I know ;-) ] are either plotted on PC mapping software or have been plotted on an online service like MapMyRide etc.

Like .pdf which is supposed to be a single, universal format but has variations there are also flavours of .gpx files.

That said I've yet to find a .gpx file from whatever source that didn't load to my Garmins (a basic Edge 200 with a crude routing arrow to follow and an Edge Touring with both the official UK OS 1-50,000 maps and the OSM maps for the whole of Europe) and show on the mapping selected.

Hi Mat,

just tested again and works fine on my mac - which is no help to you!

Just double check the file name has no odd characters in it like . or / or \ and try a 'properties' view to see if the .gpx extension is correctly identified.

Import a gpx using the import screen available in the activities area. Just beware that the only way you know its been uploaded is a green tick that appears in the dialogue box. The dialogue box doesn't disappear until you click on the file linked to the green tick.

I am using the 'new' rather than the 'classic' view of the website.

Sorry I can't help more - it really is a useful feature as with an 810 (bluetooth) and the app you can alter a route on a phone and then update on the unit without needing a PC/laptop or USB cable - came in handy on tour last year.

I've had the same problem but seem to have discovered a work-around [anyway, it works for me!].
Run the gpx file [irrespective of which app has created the file] through the convert option here http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do and export it as a GPX track [yes, I know it's probably already a gpx track!]. Then import this converted gpx track into garmin connect as normal.
Good luck!
