30 foods under 40 Calories and relevant recipes for each
Re: 30 foods under 40 Calories and relevant recipes for each
I think the vast majority of people viewing and commenting in the the Health and Fitness section DO wish to control their weight better. 67% of all men and 54% of women in Britain are overweight or obese. That's not a statistic to be taken lightly, it's an epidemic.

Strange how whenever weight and calories are mentioned people assume everybody wants to lose weight (rather than read what is written).

The problem I had was eating enough, it's hard work cramming all the calories you need. When I see people eating one banana after a ride, they must be seriously underestimating how much energy exercise burns.
When I was touring, I got through about 4500-5000kcal/day doing 50 miles/day:
Breakfast: Fifth of a pack of muesli, 500cc milk: 720kcal
Sandwiches: half a large loaf: ~1200kcal
Evening meal example: rice+ tinned chilli:1050kcal
1.5-2 packets of biscuits/nuts: 1500-2000kcal
I think people get overweight because they underestimate how many calories there are in fizzy drink, alcohol, chocolate etc., all the between-meal items that "don't count".

Back to the OP - does anyone NOT like broccoli!!? It's got more iron content than any other vegetable.

What? Even more iron than you-know-what? (no don't answer that, I knew that too). Anyway, I love broccoli. Along with all greens.
We don't really have a problem putting together healthy meals. The difficulty has been cutting out all the unhealthy stuff in between! I think I'm just about managing. Today's lunch was a root vegetable rösti. Well, a sort of rösti - a mix of grated potato, carrot, parsnip and onion, rather than potato alone, plenty of herbs and mustard, and baked in the oven rather than fried. Served up with salad. Very tasty, very filling, and high in fibre! It probably went over the 40 Kcals, but I'm not really counting...

I had mussels in garlic to take away, outdoors by the sea. About 275 cals all told. Very cheap and we got a bottle of white plonk out the supermarket as an aperitif!
A superior super food and under a tenner for us both. Cycling back the 32 miles home, was another story for another day

Ah! But if you drank half of the wine (about 2 glasses) that would have added another 320Kcal approx. - gotcha!
But I agree about the mussels. A cheap source of protein, and sustainable, unlike so many fish and seafoods. I love 'em! We find that a 1Kg bag (live) from Waitrose is plenty for two people, and if we supplement with lots of garlic bread (OK that piles on the Kcal!) it's enough for three. Easy to cook, we just use a straightforward moules marinières recipe, go easy on the herbs, leave out the cream. Oh dear, here comes the wine again!

Haha! You just can't get away without the wine! Saying that it's about 20% less calories than red wine. Man cannot live by bread alone
I'm also a big fan of squat lobsters, easy enough to get where I am on the coast but apparently most fishermen toss them back on the sea, and cheap enough compared to their bigger brother. 'Squatties' as they're known locally:

My INR doesn't like broccoli. Peas have more than double the iron of broccoli, and less than a third of the Vitamin k.
