Heads up! Fitness trackers at Aldi today…

Post by al_yrpal »

Gps Heart Rate Monitors, so called fitness bands, blood pressure monitors and fancy weighing scales that tell you how fat you are all at Aldi for bargain prices today 16th April. There is also running clothing etc.

Just off there to recharge the fridge after a month in the antipodes.. Personally interested in trying the Waygu burgers. :D

Sorry to disappoint you but these activity trackers are glorified 3 axis accelerometers. What that means is modern form of pedometers. You can get them for as little as £15 online I think. Even the big names like fitbit, jawbone and misfit can be got for as low as £30 and they have really good apps tied in with them (well fitbit and Jawbone do but not sure of misfit).

The HRM is just a chest strap that uses bluetooth smart (BLE4.0 IIRC) to connect to a smartphone. There are many of them around too including the likes of Wahoo TIKR for abotu £30. Pay a bit more at about £45 IIRC you can get the better Wahoo model that links to ANT+ and Bluetooth but also has more connectivity with smartphones such as music control and the ability ot double tap to register a lap or split.

having said that ALDI's Crane stuff is usually ok these days. I got an early HRM from Crane about 6 years ago and it was dodgy to say the least. I used it on a fast walk I was doing and at the end of it my maximum was 226bpm and my minimum was 33bpm. I know about how difficult they are to get connection so I always use water or even saliva to create a connection and signal in those straps then when exercising rely on sweat to keep the connection wortking. However while that all worked with my older cardiosport HRM it failed to work with the newer crane HRM back then. I think and hope they are better now since I am planning to get the HRM strap.

Agreed, most of this kit is derivative, cheap 'lifestyle' equipment, and not at all the quality of even slightly more expensive trackers, loaded with sophisticated, useful sensors.

If I was into buying a glorified pedometer I would choose the jawbone UP24. It is a good looking piece of kit and does that style of tracker well. The app with it works well I understand. The Withings Pulse O2 is a neat piece of kit with their app also pretty good. IIRC that one measures sleep metrics better including REM, light, deep and another type of sleep. However sleep experts question the usefullness of these measurements these days. The WIthings one also measures HR when not active or moving (static RHR for example) and also blood oxygen pressures. That last one could be useful up at altitude for climbers or those athletes training in hyberbaric chambers.
