Crask Inn is it still open?

Post by aquilo »

Hi
Just doing some planning and wondering if the Crask Inn is still open as it was, or may still be, up for sale.

Anybody stopped by for a pint recently?

Cheers

It was open on Friday 10th April. A for sale sign was up. The landlord had left the bar unattended to do some painting, but was happy enough to come down the ladder and get me a pint and a bowl of soup. Great pub and great cycling in that area.

I had a great reception from The Crask Inn, almost 4 weeks ago now, I phoned them up the night before my intended visit and they apologised profusely as they would be away for the day and couldn't guarantee what time they would return, if at all, in the evening. I asked if I could camp in their garden, to which they welcomed my suggestion. They returned at 7 pm and invited me in for coffee, cheese & biscuits, and wouldn't take any money off me for camping. I had a cooked breakfast the next morning and left a suitable tip.

I asked about their status in selling the property and they are hoping to sell to somebody who will retain the service to B&B and all passers-by etc.

A great place to visit and stay!

Not up to date but I had a great reception there last July.
I was on an around Scotland tour.
On the day I passed through I cycled down from Orkney to Lairg.
Quite a long day with a loaded bike.
The owners offered me the chance to camp in their garden but the midges had arrived in force so I pushed on to Lairg.

Hope they manage to sell but not sure what kind of living can be made from such a business? Everyone raves about it but didn't see much dosh going across the counter.
2017 Ethiopia.5 weeks.
2018 Marrakech 2 weeks.
2023 Thailand 8 weeks.
Always on a Thorn Raven/Rohloff hub.

I stayed there a few years ago when I was doing the Munros. They were butchering venison on the kitchen table when I arrived. The landlord appeared c/w bloody apron and a hacksaw when I was waiting patiently at the bar. Like a scene from Deliverance :-D

They told me that they were normally very busy for about 10 months of the year with the B&B business - and of course it is also a working farm, with cattle, sheep and chickens - he is from a farming background originally and although they want to retire, they will still run a small-holding. They also told me that the bar had a bit of a reputation before they took ownership especially on a Sunday when the different licensing laws for an Inn made it very popular with young people driving from afar. I don't expect the bar does that much business now by itself and that the B&B is the main money earner - indeed, they didn't open the bar for me, just offered me the coffee, but as my following day to JOG was against strong headwinds perhaps I was better off without?

Not really on topic but of interest to me as my great, great grandfather was born in Crask Inn. Have not yet found out if they were owners or tenants. Living there nowadays is more of a lifestyle choice than a business I think.

It's still open, and did me a very unique dinner, bed and breakfast for £55 all in last week.

There's even a mobile phone signal, so you're not totally out of touch when they turn the electricity off at night any more.

Still open but with a "For Sale" board outside.

I must confess as cycling by I thought I would not want to get caught out in the area in bad weather or with a mechanical, The Crask is a bit like an oasis in the desert.

I stayed the night in July,it had been a long day coming from dunnet head and the last two hours were in the pouring rain. Finally it appeared "like an oasis in the desert" I staggered to the bar and ordered I pint of local ale and was offered a bowl of stew and dumplings and put up in the summer house which was much preferable to the tent in the conditions, they charged me the same as camping, nothing. Breakfast was equally enjoyable, served at a big table with interesting company..it's a place I'll never forget staying at, it feels more like a community service than a business, if your doing a JOGLE make sure it's one of your stops.

I called in with my son on our way north to Tongue and enjoyed a fine pint of Yellowhammer bitter at the table outside. The inn is up for sale and has been for a while - the charming lady who runs it was saying that she's been finding it very tiring and needs to 'move on', so she's not taking bookings for next year. She was very knowledgeable about local birdlife too. A special place - go while it's still there, before it's turned into a second home or 'shooting lodge' or some such....

I had a great coffee in there two weeks ago towards the end of my LeJog. We had a good chat with a few others who were in there as well.

Sounds like a worthy stop, I hope this place remains as a pub when it does get sold, I'm looking forward to dropping in for a cold one when I attempt my JOGLE next year.
