So, the $64 Q. - would I notice the difference if I bought the more expensive and bang-up-to-date Veloce, instead of saving money by fitting an older-and-cheaper Campy groupset?

I think I would go for the latest, simply because of future compatibility for when you start changing parts around. 2010 they changed 10 speed so the new stuff is not guaranteed compatible with the older 10 speed. 2001 they changed 9 speed with the same results.

I have hybrid triple systems, 8 speed Record Ergo with Racing Triple rear mech, 8 speed Veloce Ergo with Racing Triple rear mech, old 10 speed Centaur with Comp Racing rear mech. All work very well. The old (1992 ish) Record is superb, it feels so solid; the Veloce (1998) is good and crisp; the 10speed Centaur feels precise. I suppose the nicest to use is the 10 speed Centaur.

I haven't used Campag for ages and only 8 speed so I'm the wrong person to be asking.

I had 9sp Veloce triple in regular use from 2000 till 2013 and am just about to put it on a new frame. Reading this thread makes me confident that it's a good move and an upgrade is not needed. Happy! :D

I got hold of comp triple bits (chainset / f & r derailleur) fior around £100. Better than Veloce and will work with either 8 / 9 / 10. eBay is your friend...
Bought a record triple off a club mate for £50, only used twice, but don't have a Record triple BB yet.

FWIW I think that campag suggest different BB lengths on the ST triples depending on frame design. I think that even the shorter of the two they suggest is still too long for some tastes (mine) so I usually fit the shortest I can manage. The limiting condition is either that

a) the inside chainring hits the chainstay (and yeah, you don't want any chainsuck even when you are a way away from that) or

b) the front mech won't shift onto the inside chainring (or clear in bottom gear).

cheers

Agreed, Brucey. I run the stock 111mm square taper BB with a Centaur triple (same forging as Mirage/Veloce/ etc) rather than the recommended 115. The chainline seems much happier to me.

Yep.
111mm for me too with my Campag Chorus triple.

115mm is for oversized downtube like is the fashion these days because it puts the front mech further out.

Ah, that's good info!
Anyone know what happens if I run a Record triple (lower profile) with a Centaur 111mm BB? I'm assuming it would run perfectly as the Record Triple is supposed to run a 111mm anyway - my concern was whether it was asymmetric (i.e. possibly longer on drive side)? Can I run the Record Triple on a Record (102mm) double BB? (I have both options open to me...)

I use Record triple chainset on a Chorus triple (111) BB. I dragged out the installation info for the BB. It says that Record and Chorus 111 BBs are assymetrical with a chainline of 46.5mm whereas the Centaur, Veloce and Mirage 111 BBs are symmetrical with a chainline of 43.5mm with a double chainset or 45mm with a triple - why it should be different escapes me since the triple is a double crank with extra bits to support the inner ring. Of course this does not necessarily mean it will not fit. As for the 102 BB, that too might work because it gives a chainline of 43.5mm. So it looks like the results will be the same with either of the bottom brackets you have, so suck it and see.

Good point - mine is with a 31.8mm seat tube, so not exactly skinny steel.

These shots are from the 2006 spares.
I have the 2006 Chorus on my Mercian, but have the Mirage one as a spare. Both are 111mm and both fit a Campag Triple on my frame. I think that the 102mm may fit because there seems to be plenty room either side. 4.5mm is easy ...... possibly.

As you can see, the BB lengths seem inconsistent across the range.

You'll also see that my Chorus Triple 111mm BB is supposed to be asymmetrical, but I can assure all my readers that it is indeed symmetrical! This is because Italian frames have a different BB shell width and Mr Campag in his wisdom has failed to notice this and say so.

I wonder why the lower end BBs aren't either symmetrical or asymmetrical.

that was kind of my point really, the 111mm BB is longer than it needs to be (by some margin) on an old-school steel frame and it works quite well even on a frame with a 31.8mm seat tube.... quite what frame might need the 115mm BB is anyone's guess. On most non-oversized steel frames I think you can use 102 or 105mm BBs with the veloce 9s triple and it works out fine.

cheers

Could anyone say if an 8 or 9 speed campag triple chainwheel would be compatible with a campag 10 speed chain?

I have a centaur 10 s compact at the moment but may want to go to a triple at some point.

So I suppose my question comes down to thickness of the 8 and 9 speed chainwheels, unless someone knows of another compatibility problem? I have centaur ergos (2009 carbon levers generation) which I believe may have the range to work a triple but expect I may need to change derailleurs.
