Any users of the triple chainring version of Campy's Veloce groupset out there, who will comment on it?

I have one on my Mercian which had a double 9 speed when I got it. Just put the triple on and off I went. Never had to adjust anything. There is a bit of an annoying noise rub on the middle ring but whatever you do you cannot adjust it out. But its no prob. Sourced it s/h on here.

I had early :10 speed. Only stopped when the right shifter gave up.

9s triple seems like a nice piece of kit; you can fit an inside chainring down to 24T (non campag chainring fits campag chainset) if you want which makes up for the limited range of sprockets from campag; IIRC something like 29T was the maximum available.

Quite a few tourists run 9s campag transmission but use shimano cassette hubs instead, just to get to use the larger sprockets you can get. Shame they don't last as long...

cheers

Thanks folks - that's the sort of comments I was hoping to get. Cheers.
I read a brief review in Cycling Weekly which was mildly positive and thought I'd seek some 'real world' experience.

My first 5 speed racer had a Campy Record mech. and I recall it, and its chain, going on year after year, with just dollops of oil for maintenance... ;-)

The issue of Campy's focus on ratios that favour the stronger/faster cyclist doesn't arise for me, as have 406 wheels, so ironically a cassette like their 11-25, which is one of the standard Campy options, would give me development that is almost ideal for my touring needs! Indeed, was thinking that a double chainset, with their 34 and 53 tooth rings would give me all the gears I need for touring as well as save me the 100 quid or so needed for the triple option, but I imagine that the 19 tooth jump is a bit much to ask of the double chain ring front mech. and if I have to use the front mech. designed for the triple chain rings, I might as well get the chain rings to match!

I've run the square taper triple for over 10 years now, again with different rings to make a 24/39/48. It all works very well, no complaints!

My 9x3 triple levers are @ 13 years old and still on the commuter in everyday use (the lh shifter has been broken since 2009 - the casing holding the brake pivot doesn't do its job 100% as a result but testament to the quality is the 10k plus miles its done since then!), the replacement 10x3 have been on the touring bike for @ 5 years. I've been using a Campy Xenon triple ST chainset running 52/38/26 rings (2 alloy Campag and a steel Buzzsaw for the 26) and its currently a custom built Campag Veloce 11-29 cassette (the bike is an Airnimal with 520 wheels). Rear mech is a mid cage 2003 Veloce, front mech is a standard Dura Ace triple of 2004 vintage, i run either Campag Record or KMC SL chains.

The shifters are solid and upshift is usually pretty slick, shifting into the 26 ring is fine unless the system is under stress - thats not the shifters fault but due partly to the short chainstays. Originally i ran a Sugino 500 chainset with 48/38/28 rings, shifting was okay but could be a bit of shove sometimes despite the smaller jumps.

I have 2012 Veloce 10x2 on another bike, front shifting is a bit clunky without the nice micro adjust feature of the older shifters (to be fair its not significantly worse than my 11x2 Super Record RS shifters in that respect).

Your mention of the square taper struck a note of potential dread with me, Hammy - is the new-fangled Power Torque axle arrangement, with its external cups, a direct swap for the older design, requiring exactly the same sized bottom bracket?!

I'm running an old 9spd Veloce Triple on my commuter bike. Works perfectly. Uses a 115mm ST BB, which also works perfectly
I also have a Comp Triple set up, and a Record 10 triple c/set, but haven't got around to upgrading next bike, nor swapping the Veloce for the Comp triple. Basically the Veloce works perfectly without hassle. Only issue I had was the middle ring was flattened when I bought it off eBay - must have had some use, I swapped for a spare std inner ring from a double chainset. I have it set up as a std road (53/39) with a granny (30). It's a 175 crank, and one of the reasons I acquired the other bits was because I prefer 172.5s.

Over the time I've had it on, I've run 9 and 10 speed, and have reverted across all the bikes to 9 - partly for standardization, partly for longevity.

Yes, the cups screw directly into the same 68mm bottom bracket shell.

I've only ever run Campag 8x3, but oh my how sweet it was, left/front shifter is still something I miss with its muliple micro shifts.
There are still quite a few 8 speed ergos out there but you can buy new 9 & 10 speed ergos for peanuts
