Cable Locks

Post by climo »

I have a very good D lock and the common 6 ft coiled cable combination lock which I use for 'safer' areas but which I just detest. As most will know the cable is so springy its not easy to use, its like fighting a snake :) It's useable length is much shorter.
Are there any half decent long cable locks, preferably not combination, that aren't pre-coiled but can be easily coiled like a rope? If its not a combination then can anybody suggest a padlock? Weight is an issue or else I might as well use the D lock.

Cable Locks

Post by Heltor Chasca »

Hi I've got a 2m Abus (which I think is 12mm) one that I use in conjunction with another lock. I coil the cable up and both locks fit in a small dry bag. Works well for me...b

I've a cable with loops crimped on the end, which I just lock with a padlock. You can get one made to pretty much any length from somewhere like a chandlers (yacht), and they don't kink as they are designed to hold masts up. Can get them plastic coated too and in various diameters,

My current opinion is that any cable thinner than 12mm "braid of braids" can be cut too easily by opportunists. I also favour integral locks (rather than padlocks) and an alarm if possible ;)

I have an Abus cable lock, it must be about 12mm diameter. Its heavy and it was expensive. I carry it stowed like this looped around the back stays.

The Abus cable sounds what I want, what model is it? Does it come with an integral lock?
The ships cable sounds good to.
thanks

Nope...It is crimped with a loop either end and you use it in conjunction with a D lock or in my case, a Granit. I think you can get robust D locks that are only about 100mm long...b

I appreciate that you probably only use it in safe-ish areas for short times and that it is convenient to carry but that lock does strike me as expensive indeed al for the level of security and deterrence it provides.

Not after an argument i stress, just an honest observation, all the best

This is the Abus lock that I use:

15mm cable and around £17 for the 120cm version. I use mine for locking my bike up inside my workplace - so not a high risk of theft situation.

I wouldn't object to the price if it were 1.8mt and not coiled but it states coiled in the ad :(

There is a similar one which has steel sleeves around the cable. Its much more secure but much heavier at 1.5 kg. I bought this one because it seemed a good compromise between security and weight. If I lived in Saaf London, I would be going for the best D lock I could find. :D .
