Hi, I know newer shimano brakes say they can only be used with the newer brifters, but has anyone tried them with old ones? I was hoping to use a set of r451s which seem like a bargin from ribble. Do people think this'll work?
Thanks for your help
new brakes old brifters?
Re: new brakes old brifters?
There was a thread on this recently which I can't find now, but I think the consensus was that they would work.
Re: new brakes old brifters?
The BR-R451 uses the old cable-pull ratio according to the chart gaz linked to above. So there will be perfect compatibility with old shifters and acceptable compatibility with shifters using the new cable-pull standard.

I do dislike that word…brifters. Nearly as annoying as fixie and L’eroica.

How could I have not mentioned that one
There is nothing wrong with the word L'Eroica or the event, it's just that it's used so many times in eBay auctions to sell bikes that would clearly not qualify for the event. Old bike = L'Eroica.

New standard is Super SLR (Super Super Linear Response) old standard is SLR (Super Linear Response)
I think everything from Claris upwards is Super SLR now with Shimano.
