dumb tire question
dumb tire question
Okay, found a split in my rear tire carcass before setting off for a ride. I was worried obviously the tube would get a puncture or overheat from the road but I went out for a quick twelve miles. Not getting to far away in case I had to walk back home, it held.
Anyway getting to the point. I have a 20 inch Schwalbe Marathon on it, and for some reason the Marathon and the Michelin Protek are unavailable at Halfords. They also have Kojak's but they are 20 x 1.35. Here's the question, my current tire is 20 x 1.5 will the Kojak seat on the wheel or will it be to narrow?
I would prefer the Marathons but the only thing available to order from Halfords at the moment is the Kojak so I just want to be sure before I waste the money.

Re: dumb tire question
there are several wheel rim sizes that are called 20" size. This being the case it is always wise to check the ISO size on the tyre, which will be marked (say) 37-406. Any other tyre marked XX-406 should at least go onto the same rim, even if it isn't the exact right thing for the job (being too narrow or too wide in section).
If the '406' number is different on two tyres then they won't fit on the same rim.
cheers

Re: dumb tire question
According to Schwalbe's website the Marathon is 40-406 and the Kojak is a 36-406, so it looks like the answer is no.
I'll be waiting for Halfords to fix there supply issues. I know 406 is the outer circumference, so as long as they're the same I'm good. The smaller number was the one I thought I needed to worry about as it denotes the tire width. How come there isn't a bead setting number? Wouldn't that make sense?

Re: dumb tire question
both those tyres will fit on the same rim because they are both 406s, just slightly different widths.

Re: dumb tire question
If it's the PDQ and it still has the original rims (which are moderately wide), then yes a Kojak will fit fine. I replaced the Marathons on mine with Kojaks just to get a bit closer to the ground for my short legs (it did help a little). Plus it made the bike go faster (even after I reset the computer for the smaller diameter!
).
Re: dumb tire question
Thanks Hercule. I have ordered it from Halfords. Now its just a waiting game. It's the original rear dual drive sach on the rear still.

Re: dumb tire question
I have changed a pair of Michelin 37 - 406 for a pair of Tryker 40 - 406 they fit fine, on the tyre wall it says for Crotched Tyre Rims Only. Any one know what they are. I have ridden them for 40 miles with no problem .An answer would be helpful.
Re: dumb tire question
They mean crotched rims ( from the French for hook ) - so yes they are the same.
I think they have to put that on in case some moron tries to put one on a tubeless rim.
I just copied this off cyclechat. Sounds right though Dave.

Re: dumb tire question
Thanks for that they are a easy rolling tyre a bit twitchy but I like them.
Re: dumb tire question
I have more 20" Marathons than I really need... I got some 1.5/20" for my Moutlon and found they were too wide for the combination of dual pivot brakes and mudguards. You can have one for a tenner (post included) if you want: drop me a line, and that still leaves me a couple of spares for the 'bent.

Re: dumb tire question
If I hadn't ordered Kojaks already I would have taken you up on that. Thanks for the offer though. Someone else on here may be interested though.
