As for checking units, I take mine to the GP once a year and we do two goes, one with mine, one with hers, and if they are reasonably similar we reckon the calibration of mine is OK. Have to do this because of a past problem meaning my BP goes up if I am in any medical situation.

My unit records the last 30 readings individually, and also does an average on them, which the GP likes a lot.

That's what I'm going to do when I see him next.

I'll let sleeping dogs lie for now, and keep an eye on the way my BP changes from home vs the health centre.
I'm going to try to relax and take a few more goes at it to compare.

It is amazing how big the 'white coat effect' can be!

White Coat Syndrome is a well-known issue. It's not the "white coat" that gets to me, rather than the stress of being at the hospital and being tested.

As it happens, they refused to do my procedure because my BP was too high. I told them that I can't win on this issue as when they test, my BP is high! Cleft stick comes to mind.

Hi,
What I normally do is tell them I've done my blood pressure at home and it's okay.
If you have a home BP monitor then all you need to do is do it for a week or so before you go in to the doctors et cetera.
I find they will accept this as opposed to the readings they get when you go in to see them.
My GP allows me to submit blood pressure readings via their website.
Does yours?

They can be good enough.

Their recommended use is described in the NICE guidance, and there's an NHS list of validated devices. Links to the documents and discussion here:

I'm not sure if this was meant seriously. That's what white coat syndrome is. The garb is figurative.

Did you communicate with them before the appointment? From what you've told us this was quite likely to happen.

And now you have a plan which will allow appropriate preparations to be made and precautions to be taken before and during the surgical intervention. That seems very sensible.

I'd agree that white coat syndrome is best reserved for when "people exhibit a blood pressure level above the normal range, in a clinical setting,"

That then keeps separate things which are common to settings which in layman's terms wind people up. eg Unclear signs (both in car parks and within buildings to different departments) unhelpful staff at "help points," rip-off parking charges, parking payment machines that don't work etc. So, I tend to get wound up if eg I do dad's taxi service to airports and it's not through "anxiety experienced during a clinic visit."

Now, it's often just like that going to hospitals etc., even when not going as a patient.

It's not invariably so. If I reflect on all the problems I had looking after my late mother in her final years, her GP practice's reception gave exemplary service. In particular, the receptionists seemed imbued with an ethos of providing a service and had the interpersonal skills to prevent potential problems or to resolve them when they occurred.

I’d of thought it the perfect word as they were unwilling to go ahead after discussing with Mick and he , probably reluctantly, agreeing.
I’ve been there where the surgeon refused to do a minor op on me until my BP went down. Sitting quietly for 15 minutes got me passed that hurdle.

Hi,
I get white coat syndrome even though I am not stressed at visits to the gp / other medical. (been there so many times over my life)
But as of late my BP is erratic and off the scale and it won't elevate on that......well I hope not.
