Have just had dealings with some 1990's? Shimano RSX shifters. Virtually unused, they weren't working because the grease had solidified locking the pawls. Not only do they appear better made but they also shift more nicely than the Ultegra 6800 shifters on a bike I bought last year. The change is far more positive with a firm feel and click rather than the mushy feel of modern Shimano.

I know others feel Shimano have a durability problem, but I'm still using the 9 speed stuff and it seems pretty good to me. I get parts to last ages. The worst groupset purchase I ever made was in 1996 when I bought Campag Chorus 8 speed that was really clunky and had loads of chain suck. And the bottom bracket let water in from the back, which was bad news as my frame had a hole in the bottom of the shell.

I wonder if the quest for ever lighter parts and more sprockets is harming the 10 / 11 speed stuff from Shimano. Are other brands so much better in 10 / 11 speed?

I think what Colin is giving another example of is a (somewhat presumptive) 'closed question' as beloved by lawyers etc.

FWIW I took a peek inside a set of Claris shifters recently, and the clicky bits didn't seem that far removed from Ultegra 8s ones from way back when.

The question "when did you stop beating your wife?" is the classic example of "begging the question"....bung it into Google for lots of hits.

To mention that someone may beat their wife is insulting - it suggests they drink wife beater aka Stella Artois.

The quality of Shimano components has fallen IMO - I just wondered if anyone knows when it started. Once the STI shifters had aluminium bodies now they all seem to be plastic for example. Once the bottom brackets lasted for many thousands of miles now they don't because they put the bearings in the way of mud, wet and other crap - surely a drop in quality?

It wouldnt work as a good example if it wasnt, would it. It was chosen (not by Colin) because it is bad.

"When did you stop making your wife breakfast in bed" wouldnt have the same effect would it?

Anyway it appears Mr Shimano may have stopped/started beating his wife when he produced the external bottom bracket.

IMHO, Shimano has improved since they first came on the bicycle scene in UK in the 60's.

Yep but didn't they peak some years ago - maybe when trying to out do Sunrace?

Dunno at all.
It was just rubbish when it came out .................. in competition with Huret and Campag for instance.

I have some Shimano Nexus stuff on our utility bike, but that's my only foray into Mr Shim's products in the whole of my cycling life to date.

Pete 75, there are going to be a lot of people with positive accounts of Shimano equipment.
I for one, will wax lyrical about Shimano 600 and Dura Ace hubs. Still silky smooth after many
years use.

I also have lots of good things to say about Campag stuff too. Their Ultrashift Ergo levers (Chrous)
are very good (about to buy some Record ones soon).
