Yes, as a Canadian perusing old British maps I was astounded to see that a county as large as Yorkshire was represented by only three Members of Parliament.thirdcrank wrote: ↑16 May 2022, 6:02pm Nothing to do with bridges, but quite recently I discovered that a riding is an electoral district in Canada

Re: View from the bridge
I presume - without any real knowledge - that thirding (Riding) and farthing came into English as Norse (?) fractions. I also presume that "Riding" as an electoral division was adopted in Canada in the same way that county seems to have been adopted in the US.
Any connection between Riding in that usage and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is probably coincidental

Yes, as cited upthread. But via Old English rather than directly from Old Norse.thirdcrank wrote: ↑18 May 2022, 3:53pm I presume - without any real knowledge - that thirding (Riding) and farthing came into English as Norse (?) fractions. Beggars Bridge, near Glaisdale.
Four bridges in view and, just out of shot despite my best efforts, a ford to the left.

Bridge over a small tributary of the River Annan, Dumfries & Galloway.
New resident spooked when we cycled past.
Returned later with camera:

Another couple of birds 'n bridge combo's.
This 175 year old riveted iron bridge carries the railway line over the Leeds - Liverpool canal at Burscough W.Lancs.
I liked the way the makers mark 'popped' in the strong sunlight
I wouldn't want to be the folks who have to paint it though, there are multiple pigeon nests underneath it's span with consequent large amounts of guano build-up to remove first. A nice little history of the maker here (photo of old book) :-

An ash (?) tree fallen out of the bank of the River Douglas next to the Leeds & Liverpool canal, there are a couple more which have been straddling the river in the last couple of years ; still uncleared. This one's been down for a couple of weeks. It leads to a farm track which exits onto Lees Lane, near Dalton.

This one
Towpath side.
I am here. Where are you?
Re: View from the bridge
Overgrown swing-bridge near Burscough W.Lanc's, it would have been field access at one point.
A bit of fishing graffiti a bit further along the towpath.
