Seat post.

Post by Polite »

Accidentally, I have damaged my seat post by it moving down while I was riding, it hadn't been tightened fully, leaving unsightly scratches and patterns. Apart from buying a new seat post, any suggestions on how to get rid of the marks?

If it's black, you can buy nice looking carbon weave sticky sheet from motor spares shops or ebay.
If it's silver, you can also buy the same carbon weave in silver. Except if it's a really nice post, then apart from polishing the scratches out (difficult, particularly if anodised), all you could do is paint it with a rattle can. Avoid painting the bit that's inside the frame.

As an aside, I've seen mirror finish spray paint on sale, but have never used it. Anyone have any experience of this stuff?

Sorry off topic but i am looking for something to remove the mirror finish on my microwave. I am fed up with having a boil over problem when i cant see what's happening inside when the sun shines on it.

This is the glass front yes? I'm not sure, but perhaps metal polish worked in with a drill polishing attachment. As long as the mirror finish isn't the device for screening out the microwaves.

I've tried black marker pens but IME have never got them to match -- there is black and black, also seen from an angle they can appear purple or copper. :(

the very first ride i had on a custom built, steel 631 frame with campagnolo titanium seatpost was to visit a friend several years ago. on arrival he had another (heavyweight) friend in attendance who proceeded to have a go on the bike without my knowledge. on his return i found the seatpost maybe 2 or more inches down into the frame with the associated marking thereon. his words of "i just had a quick go on your bike mate" were met with...er....some disdain.
they're still there to this day!!

Maybe i'm too old but the idea of buying a new seat post because of cosmetic scratches strikes me as odd.

Can i ask what the bike is?

What is it used for?

It's a brand new touring bike, a bit special, that I use for everything; commuting, errands and touring. Why odd? My original post was does anyone have any tips on how to remove the marks. I'll eventually buy a new seat post when needed. As a person might feel a bit naffed off if a new car was scratched, I feel the just the same about my bike.

a steel seat post on a 'special' new touring bike? It doesn't sound that likely to me. Does a magnet stick to the seat post?

at risk of repeating myself, photo please...? Or at least the make and model of the bike/seat post?
