I regularly put my bike (Spa tourer 54 cm) in the back of my Fiesta. Both wheels stay on the bike. There's a knack to squeezing it in, but it's quicker than taking the wheels off.
Same with my Scott CR1, both wheels on.
Technique is basically; back seats down, passenger seat fully forward, parcel shelf removed. Bike goes in flat, with the drive side pointing upwards, back wheel goes in first and gets guided towards the back of the passenger seat where it just about (or does) touch. After that the bike will slot in. Turn the handlebars to the left to give clearance for the boot to shut. It can sometimes be tricky getting the shifters out of the way of the plastic part of the luggage shelf on the left.
Be extra careful when closing the boot!
On problem is in this configuration carrying passengers is impossible. Luggage is possible but tricky as the bike gets in the way of everything!
That said carrying passegners is possible, for a front seat passenger the front wheel needs to come off to allow the front seat to be further back. I can also carry my daughter in a child seat in the back but that's quite tricky, both wheels off, and strict instructions for her not to touch the chain which invariably ends up right next to her!
I keep looking at the bikes of bike racks etc, but they seem a lot of hassle and expense when I might only be taking my bike somewhere half a dozen times a year. Although being able to drive out somewhere with family, have a day out, then ride home would be pretty good.
