Daily fitness for 66yr old

Post by rich g »

I'm a 66yr male,and would like to find a fitness program,at present i cycle about 25 miles a week,walk 7hours a week.

But do no upperbody or strenth exercise, hence i lack strenth, but i do suffer from ongoing shoulder injury of which the physio cannot cure.

There's no such thing as "fitness" !

I remember a TV program when I was a lad, which competed top athletes from different sports against each other - relevance here is that (surprise surprise) the top marathon runners were useless at press-ups and the top sprinters couldn't lift weights for any length of time (trained in explosive power etc). Off topic, it was a surprise to me that Geoff Capes could actually hurdle, but then he generally was exceptional.

If you want to get "fitter" then you need to ask yourself what you want to be fit for - then train for that (with some cross-training to help keep your body balanced, but that 'balance' is a personal choice).

I suppose the question to be asked is, what do you want to attain?

I am 65, so not much different from you. I cycle a bit more than 25 miles per week, on average, but I haven't measured my walking. So I'm probably doing about the same overall, exercise-wise, as you. I've got my body weight down from the 'obese' bracket. And I'm keeping in reasonably good health (physically, at least  ). I hope to go on for a while yet and have a reasonably lifestyle in retirement.

That's no doubt more than most 66yr olds do. However it also depends how much effort you need for those tasks but any exercise is far better than none.

I'm 67 and I normally cycle around 100 miles a week, and I walk as well. It's the luck of the draw, and many of my comtemprories on other forums are suffering health problems, including school friends. Just keep going, as my GF says, if you can do it today you can do it tomorrow.

And there I go, thinking that you must look just like your avatar....!
