Can anyone tell me if there is a way of using it to navigate to the start point of a GPX track i.e. show a highlighted road on the map.
I've been used to using a phone with Osmand. With this I can choose a GPX track to follow and start some way off from it and it will work out a route to take me to the track.
I don't seem to be able to do this on the Etrex 20, is it something I'm not doing or isn't it capable of this?
I've found using it to be a steep learning curve but so far like it a lot, save for the above. Really like the battery life, much better than the phone but at present tend to use the phone as I don't always start a track at the beginning.
Hope someone can help.
etrex 20 Question
Re: etrex 20 Question
There may be some automatic way, but otherwise, if the GPX track can be shown on the map, pan and zoom until the little cursor is over the start of the track (zoom in enough that it is accurately on the road you want). Then click the joystick. Some guesses about the location name may be presented – street names, etc. If so, click one of them, which will lead to the “Go” screen. If no places are suggested, the unit will instead present the “Go” screen immediately. In either case, you can just click “Go” to immediately calculate a route to the start of the track.
If you wish, you can save the starting location as a waypoint by pushing the Menu button while on the “Go” screen, then clicking “Save as Waypoint”. This gives you the option of easily re-calculating the route to the starting point if for any reason your journey is interrupted.

Re: etrex 20 Question
Thanks for that, I'd used the zoom and pan to locate the start point and noted the coordinates which I then used as a go to point. A bit more long winded but it was the only way i could think of. I'll try what you suggest but it still falls short of what I can do on a 70 Euro smartphone, shame the battery life is so cr@p.
Re: etrex 20 Question
If I've understood your question correctly you can do this quite easily if you put a waypoint at the start of your track with an easily identifiable name. I would use something like 001 Hamble Start (for a route to Hamble).
To navigate to the start of your track select WHERE TO?, then WAYPOINTS, find your 001 Waypoint and select it.
The Etrex will then route you to the start. On road for Distance will give you a shorter but perhaps busier route, On road for Time will give you a longer but quieter more picturesque route.
Depending on where you are going, your settings and your mapping you may find yourself subject to one the Etrex idiosyncracities whereby it occassional things you might like to cycle along a dirt track or public footpath, in this instance I ignore the instruction and let it recalculate the route once it's realised I'm going a different way.
There is a lot of useful info about plotting routes at http://www.aukadia.net/gps/lwg_20.htm
