Fridge/Freezer

I hope this is the correct place for this? if not then please move it.

I have a fridge freezer (freezer on the bottom of the 6ft tall unit). Most of the time it sits there quietly in the room but at times it starts to refreeze and the motor starts up at the back and it makes a very noisy sound.

Does anyone know anything about fridge freezers and can tell me what I need to do to get it quite again? I would prefer not to have to replace it.

Thanks in advance.

How old is it? Is the compartments in the freezer full or is it having to work hard because it is empty

It could be the fan is hitting ice. If it's frost free, it will probably require a full defrost. You will need to turn the appliance off for 48 hours and leave the doors open. You will probably find that will cure it.

The appliance is not that old from what I can remember. It is not full so I will get it defrosted and then send Mrs T out for more supply's to fill it.

Thanks for the replies

I would fill my freezer with poly bags of shredded paper when it was only half full. I believe it is more efficient to keep your freezer full.

Is there enough of an air gap at the back of the unit to allow heat escape? Also, check to see if the door is properly aligned and the seals are making a complete seal. If they are damaged or compressed, warm air gets in then the motor has to kick in to cool it down again.

Is it sitting level on the floor? Try rocking slightly. If it moves at all it is not properly supported on the floor and can get noisy.

I read somewhere that a scrumbled-up sheet of newspaper does the trick - I imagine the point is to avoid large areas of empty air...?

Ours made a lot of fan noise which was solved when we took some time to level it out completely. Trouble is I am prone to keep knocking it and the floor is not 100% level so every so often we have to repeat. Not easy with a large fridge freezer fully loaded with the week's groceries. One day I plan to run our freezer stock right down to nothing and do a full defrost and leveling out with it all empty. I'll wait for it to reach formula 1 noises first!

My first thought before any posts.
